Because in building the new Africa Twin we have.
New chassis, bodywork and riding position ensure off-road control.
Because control is everything in the dirt. So we completely redesigned the Africa Twin’s chassis and a lighter main frame; aluminium CRF450R-style swingarm and bolt-on aluminium rear subframe are matched to adjustable long-travel Showa front forks and rear shock. The riding position, too, is tailored for sitting and standing with high-set handlebars and contoured, slimmer seat width. Taut rally-style bodywork is equally slim with compact front fairing and screen. Dual headlights are full LED and have automatic DRL technology for piercing and consistent daytime visibility.
Hard-riding, free-range and off-grid. Built without compromise and on experience of decades the new CRF1100L Africa Twin leaves the rulebook in its roost. Honed off-road ability opens up terrain many see only in their dreams. Its twin-cylinder engine is stronger, everywhere and matched to a lighter, sharper chassis. And it is smarter with 6 Riding modes, HSTC, Cornering ABS and Wheelie Control as well as TFT touch screen display, Apple CarPlay®, Bluetooth and cruise control. The Africa Twin challenges limits. Go push some and find your true adventure.
It’s time. Time to soar. To be truly free and feel your tyres bite into dirt, seeking the grip and escape you need. The motorcycle beneath you is a tool, your tool. And you ride together as one. This is Africa Twin. Forged through the furnace of countless kilometres. For the ride of a lifetime.
You like a challenge. So do we. A real test of what and where is possible. So we’ve built the new Africa Twin to push limits. The engine’s increased cubic capacity boosts mid-range torque – with an extra 5Nm peak for linear, relentless drive – and brings with it an extra 5kW peak power. A competition-style exhaust breathes freely with a highly-tuned crackle. IMU control A 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) constantly monitors dynamic movement for precise management of Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), Wheelie Control and Engine Brake through four default riding modes and two customisable user modes. Cornering ABS provides increased security on-road and features an off-road setting and rear ABS switch-off.
When you’re not scanning the trail ahead, you’ll be looking at the Africa Twin’s dash – so we’ve given it a 6.5-inch TFT touch screen display, with Apple CarPlay® and Bluetooth connectivity. The Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) option offers manual and automatic shifting, as well as G switch setting for more direct drive when the road runs out.
Take a closer look at the unique features that make the Africa Twin so special
Peak power and torque are up by 5Kw/5Nm and the parallel twin-cylinder engine is stronger, everywhere in the rev-range. Intake-exhaust efficiency has been carefully optimised with new Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and throttle body feeding a redesigned cylinder head, giving enhanced throttle feel and crisp response.
Instantly recognisable, with hard-edged signature stare, the new dual LED headlight delivers a penetrating beam and also features dual Daytime Running Lights (DRL), that automatically adjust to ambient light intensity improving safety no matter the conditions.
You’ll be fully engaged here. A full-colour 6.5-inch TFT touch-screen offers immersive selection of riding modes and easy control of navigation and Bluetooth smartphone/audio connectivity. Apple CarPlay® allows seamless mirroring and management of iPhone apps or calls via the touch screen.
The IMU-controlled ABS manages braking force relative to lean angle, speed of deceleration and front and rear wheel slip ratio maintaining traction to the limit of adhesion. Lift of the rear wheel is also controlled. There’s an off-road setting and the rear brake ABS can also be switched off. The Emergency Stop Signals (ESS) indicate a hard-stop situation to those behind.
Made with a highly durable dual-layer shell the 58L top box can store two full-face helmets and carry a maximum load of 6kg. It uses the Honda one-key system so can be opened with the Africa Twin’s ignition key, but also features an opening/closing knob for easy access without the key. Available separately are the rear carrier for mounting, pillion backrest and waterproof inner bag.
Constructed from a tough dual-layer structure both 40L left and 30L right panniers benefit from lid protector frames. Width between them is less than 100cm. The left pannier will hold a full-face helmet and each pannier carries 6kg. Opening is via the Honda one-key system and fastening secure thanks to a double-catch lid lock. Mounting is via pannier bracket (available separately - rear carrier included) and waterproof inner bags are also available.
Custom-made to perfectly fit the internal shaping of the plastic top box and panniers the inner bags are waterproof and can be strapped on externally if needed. Shoulder straps make carrying off the bike easy and reflective stripes improve visibility.
Reinforcing the Africa Twin’s tough adventure credentials, there are two designs of front side pipe, either of which can be mounted separately to the engine guard. Constructed from stainless-steel and finished with an easy-to-clean and corrosion-resistant electrolytic coating, they protect both bodywork and engine in arduous riding condition, and can also mount the LED fog lights (available separately).
Constructed from stainless-steel – and sporting the CRF logo – these radiator guards elevate adventure style and their mesh pattern design protects from stone damage without hindering cooling airflow.
To get your riding position just right, there are two seat options available separately for the Africa Twin: the 25mm taller 875-895mm high seat and 25mm lower 825-845mm low seat (the standard seat is 850-870mm). Different colours are available to match paintwork.
